Dom kulture
Culture Home
The beginnings of the cultural life in Metković can be followed from the second half of the 19th century, particularly after the Croatian National Reading Room was founded. The development of the theatre life can be followed from the end of the 19th century, when numerous theatre groups start to present their shows in the Metković hotels. This was an incentive for the development of amateur theatre in Metković that lasts until today, in particular in the period between the two world wars when the project of the construction of the ‘Sokolski dom’ at the place of the today’s Culture Home was started; after World War II, in 1949, the construction of the today’s building was started according to the architectural design of Aleksandar Freudenreich. The building was completed in 1971 and is located at the crossroads of the main street of the town and the bridge across the Neretva, on its left bank. The building is made of concrete; its simple exterior is covered in stone, looking for inspiration in the traditional architecture, while on the western façade there are the arcades and the main entrance into the building. The complex is today comprised of a theatre hall that has since recently also been the cinema, a gallery and a summer stage; the building is important as a place holding numerous cultural and public events and performances in the town of Metković, such as theatre plays, cinematic projections, exhibitions, book presentations and roundtables; one of the more important events held in the Culture Home is the traditional international folklore festival ‘Na Neretvu misečina pala’.
