The Metković port is in the very centre of the town of Metković, on the left and the right bank of the Neretva river, built in the period from 1883 to 1912. It got its today’s form during that time when the embankment was made and warehouses built; it was also linked with the not so distant Railway Station, also on the right bank of the Neretva. In the course of the development of the port in Metković from the end of the 17th century, we can monitor also the development of the very town of Metković, from a small village on the border of the Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire, to an important traffic and commercial centre that it became after the mid-19th century and during the Austrian rule. Thus, the Metković port changed its position several times, from Unka on the right bank of the Neretva, Pojstružje on the left bank of the Neretva to the today’s port that was put in this position after the regulation of the riverbed of the Neretva. From the mid- 20th century, the port gradually lost its importance because the majority of the port traffic was moved to the Port of Ploče, so that today the Metković port is mostly oriented at tourism and is particularly interesting during the ‘Maraton lađa’ event (Boat marathon) that starts precisely in the Metković port.
