Ulica Vladimira Nazora i skale

Ulica Vladimira Nazora i skale

Ilije i crkvom sv. Đorđa.

Vladimir Nazor Street and Stairs

The communication in the old part of the town of Metković, located on the slopes of the Predolac hill, mostly took place in the narrow streets that, in the form of serpentines, moved along the hill through the narrow or somewhat wider stairs descending radially along the slopes. The way of constructing the alleys and stairs was conditioned by the position of the town on the slope and the town being rammed in it. Thus, one of the more important streets in the old part of the town is the one today having the name of Vladimir Nazor. This street connects the main town square, the King Tomislav Square, the St. Elijah Church and a part of the town on the eastern slope of Predolac; besides the St. Elijah church, it is expanding into today’s Lovački put Street. The today’s main road connecting the King Tomislav Square, the St. Elijah church and the Town cemetery is paved in granite cubes; there is an interesting story that the construction of the streets and their paving was financed by Ivan Baburica, a descendant of Paško Baburica, a famous Chilean industrial and ship owner of the Croatian origin, while the mother of Ivan Baburica was from Metković. The paving and the construction was made only in the 1960s. Another particularity of the old part of the town of Metković, located on the Predolac slope, are the stairs, mostly made of stone or of concrete today, connecting houses and yards, the foothills with the top of the hill and the cemetery as well as the St. Elijah church and the St. George Church.
