Railway Station

On the left bank of the Neretva, not far from the port, on the transition from the 19th into the 20th century, the railway station building was built, even though the first railway connection on the Metković – Mostar route was established as early as 1885, and several years later also the Mostar – Sarajevo route. The railway building is a monumental structure with several floors characterised by dominating historicist style elements over the modest elements of secession. In the past, the railway and the railway station played an important role in the development of Metković and in the life of its inhabitants and guests; thus, the Austrian crown prince Franz Ferdinand with spouse passed the Metković port and the railway station before and after the Sarajevo assassination in 1914. In the past decades, the railway passenger traffic and the railway building itself have lost their importance, in particular after all the passenger lines have been cancelled.
